in-store research
▔▔
For our research, we decided to take a look at what CBD products were currently on the market and paid special attention to the packaging. We not only looked at the packaging but also at the way the were displayed in stores. We went to grocery stores and a CBD specialty store.
Depending on the grocery store, the CBD products were either locked in a case or on a standard shelf. The way things were set up in the CBD store was much more spread out and friendly to those wanting to learn about CBD. Each product was given more breathing room and the store even set out brochures from the companies about their products. They also had a small testing area for those curious enough to try.

inspiration
▔▔
When we were looking for inspiration for both the graphics and the packaging we looked at not only CBD products but other high-end products like wine, candles, and makeup.

sketches
▔▔
Taking from our research, the Precision Botanical brand and the styles the graphic designers were interested in pursuing, I sketched out some ideas. Based on Precision Botanical's scientific values and CBD's connection to nature, we decided to look at more geometric and organic elements.
After talking with the rest of my team, we decided to go with a hexagon shaped box with an offset, overlapping lid. The hexagon was an interesting geometric element while the offset lid brought in visual interest and color contrast.

refinement
▔▔
I went back and forth with the graphic designers and continued to refine the packaging. Once I had a good idea of the branding and packaging, I moved into the merchandising aspect of the project. From our research into the CBD market, we knew we wanted to make an on-shelf point-of-purchase display for the standard grocery stores and a more intimate purchasing experience for the specialized CBD stores.

prototypes
▔▔
Once we had a good idea of the direction we were going in, I made mockups of the packaging. This helped with testing openings and finalizing dimensions. Once these elements were ironed out, I gave them off to the graphic designers to add in the graphic elements.

secondary packaging
▔▔
The packaging has a uniform look but is distinct from one another through size and color. The overlapping lid gave us more room for information as well as a moment of surprise for the consumer when opening the packaging. The packaging holds the glass containers in place, lessening the risk of breaking.
In our research, we found that CBD isolate is pure CBD with no THC. It is formed when manufacturers, like Precision Botanical, extract all other compounds. We decided to add stickers with this label to showcase Precision Botanical's commitment to purity. The stickers not only keep the packaging closed but also serve as a kind of tamper-evident seal.

merchandising

For the retail stores, we created a point-of-purchase display that would sit on shelves. It would have signs that would stick out of the shelves, catching the attention of consumers. There would be tester bottles on display above the corresponding products that would help inform the consumer what they were buying.
For specialty CBD stores, we designed something for a testing table. This design gives a professional but friendly way for the consumer to view and test out the product before purchasing.
